Journalism 101S (3 credits)-Newspaper Reporting & Production Journalism 201W(3 credits)-Newspaper Production Journalism 202W(3 credits) -Advanced Journalism (software application) *Applied Newspaper Production: A practical sequence designed to develop skill in desk-top publishing, investigative research and reporting, technical communication, and the basic principles of journalism. Students gain hands on experience applying the Nine Principles of Journalism: 1. first obligation is to telling the truth 2. first loyalty is to citizens 3. its essence is a discipline of verification 4. its practitioners must maintain an independence from those they cover 5. serve as an independent monitor of power 6. provide a forum for public criticism and compromise 7. strive to make the significant interesting and relevant 8. keep the news comprehensive and proportional 9. every journalist must have a personal sense of ethics and responsibility- a moral compass. Students gain proficiency in communication software, applications in modern Windows, utilization of both Mac computers and PC computers. Students participate in the content, mock-ups, editing and proofing of The Cardinal. Research, interviewing skills, and footwork are key elements in a work environment that functions within tight deadlines in order to go to press. Students gain experience using Adobe InDesign to produce the bi-weekly independent voice of the students at SVC. Students ultimately gain access to the paid positions of Editor, Assistant Editor, and Advertising Manager of The Cardinal. These positions become valuable additions to resume work experience.
