1. first obligation is to telling the truth
2. first loyalty is to citizens
3. its essence is a discipline of verification
4. its practitioners must maintain an independence from those they cover
5. serve as an independent monitor of power
6. provide a forum for public criticism and compromise
7. strive to make the significant interesting and relevant
8. keep the news comprehensive and proportional
9. every journalist must have a personal sense of ethics and responsibility- a moral compass.

Students gain proficiency in communication software, applications in modern Windows, utilization of both Mac computers and PC computers. Students participate in the content, mock-ups, editing and proofing of The Cardinal. Research, interviewing skills, and footwork are key elements in a work environment that functions within tight deadlines in order to go to press. Students gain experience using Adobe InDesign to produce the bi-weekly independent voice of the students at SVC.

Students ultimately gain access to the paid positions of Editor, Assistant Editor, and Advertising Manager of The Cardinal. These positions become valuable additions to resume work experience.

Our Challenges:

Maintaining the tradition of a free democratic press which is committed to both the 1st amendment and the ethical role of the "5th estate." We seek to report the truth and work to both inform and represent the students of Skagit Valley College.
